■ Iriomote Island ■

UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since Julty 2021, It is the second-largest island in Okinawa after the main island, with about 90% of its land covered by tropical and subtropical virgin forests.

The island is home to rare species such as the Iriomote wildcat, the crested serpent eagle, and the Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle—designated national natural monuments. Much of the island remains inaccessible, earning it the name “Japan’s last unexplored frontier.”

Taketomi Island is a popular destination where traditional Ryukyu village scenery and a peaceful island atmosphere remain intact.

Located about 10 minutes by high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Port, the island features red-tiled roof houses, white sand paths, and has been designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

Visitors can enjoy water buffalo cart rides, cycling, untouched nature, and beautiful beaches. Simply strolling around the island is a soothing experience, making Taketomi an essential stop when visiting Ishigaki.
